For Kids

Creative, noisy or serene activities abound for every child (no matter what age you may be!) in the 16 communities of Southern Midcoast Maine. Begin your adventure with a train ride aboard Maine Eastern Railroad or tour the town on the Bath Trolley (caroling at Christmas) or seek high adventure on the “sea” with a boat ride from one of many charters. Or visit Winters Gone Farm, a working Alpaca farm complete with trails and picnic area.

INDOOR OPTIONS

Want or need to be indoors? Take lessons or swim laps at The Maine Event or the Bath Family YMCA. Play tennis indoors at Maine Pines Racquet and Fitness. Get a great workout playing racquetball, wallyball, tennis or use the exercise equipment at one of many fitness centers. Lace up your roller skates and go round and round at Roller World (Topsham). See who scores the most strikes bowling at Yankee Lanes or candlepin bowling at the Bowling Bowl (Brunswick.) Be inspired to create your own hats and scarves while browsing through Halycon Yarn.

ENJOY TOWN RECREATION CENTERS

Many towns have outdoor tennis and basketball courts including Brunswick (Stanwood & McKeen Sts. and Edwards Field) and McMann Outdoor area in Bath. Year round recreation programs, including sports teams and camps, are offered by all of the 16 towns in the Southern Midcoast Region and clinics at Bowdoin College.

TEEN ACTIVITIES

Hang out at the Brunswick Teen Center and play video games or air hockey. Catch a flick, skateboard indoors or listen to a local rock band at the Bath Meetinghouse. For more movies try Eveningstar Cinema, Regal 10 Screen Cinema or a rental from any number of video stores. Outdoor skateboarding is available at the Brunswick Skate Park.

FISHING AND WATER BASED ACTIVITIES

Water, water everywhere! Bait your hook and fish at one of numerous bridges, ponds and streams…the New Meadows River, Bay Bridge Landing, Bath Waterfront Park, Pejepscot Fish Park, Caesar Pond and more.

Venture down the stairs next to the Brunswick-Topsham Hydro Station and watch salmon, alewives and shad as they migrate up the Androscoggin River through an aquarium like window.

Whiz down a water slide and picnic with the family at Coffin Pond (Brunswick.) Enjoy the cool freshwater at Peacock Beach State Park (Richmond). Discover hidden swimming ponds in all of our towns…Center Pond, Charles Pond or Nequasset Lake.

WINTER FUN

Snow and cold can’t keep you indoors! Winter fun includes outdoor ice skating on frozen ponds on the Town Mall or Coffin Pond and even ice hockey at Lishness Field (Brunswick); Bowdoinham Central School or Dummer St. Pond and Goddard Pond (Bath). Thrill to a sled ride down a hill at Bath Golf Club and McMann Outdoor Area (Bath) Foreside Rd. Recreation Area (Topsham) and Coffin Pond Hill (Brunswick). Click on the trails section for cross country skiing and snowshoeing.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES

Many of the best family outings are free… walking and hiking trails, farmer’s markets, summer outdoor concerts (Bowdoinham Waterfront, Music on the Mall in Brunswick and Bath Gazebo Concerts) and public libraries have not only children’s areas but special programs. And don’t forget a walk to a local playground. Most can be found at the elementary schools located in our 16 communities. All are open to the public during non-school hours.

No matter what your kids want to do, they can find it in one of our 16 communities. Make sure to check out the other listings under “Things to Do” on this website.
